Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks matched a franchise record for wins in a season and set a new mark for goals in one campaign, capping the 2012/13 schedule with a 5-2 victory at Bankers Life Coliseum versus the Indiana Ice Sunday, and sending themselves into the playoffs on an eight-game winning streak.
It was the Hawks' 39th win of the season, matching the total Waterloo accumulated in 2006/07 when the franchise claimed the Anderson Cup as the league's regular season champion. The final marker in the contest was Waterloo's 273rd of the year, breaking the previous best of 270, set in 1979/80, the first winter the club was composed of only junior players.
For the second consecutive matchup, an early goal in the opening period sent Waterloo in front. Mark Friedman was deep in the right wing corner 65 seconds after the opening faceoff. His sharp-angled chance was redirected into the net by Liam Pecararo. The Hawks could not add to the lead during a pair of power plays but also prevented the Ice from scoring during four special teams chances.
Indiana tied the game shorthanded on a rush by Canon Pieper at 4:43 of the second, but the Hawks reestablished control, reeling off three-in-a-row after that. Tim Lappin's chance from the side of the net put Waterloo ahead 2-1 at 6:42. Justin Kloos took a feed at the Ice blue line from Chris Leibinger before stepping into the zone and snapping a shot which caromed into the net off of goalie Tyger Howat at 10:38. On a power play at 15:58, Ryan Papa added to the lead with a shot from the right hash mark, but Indiana slowed Waterloo's momentum 64 seconds later when Mitch Hults tipped in a puck from the top of the crease.
Taylor Cammarata capped his season as the league's leading scorer, stealing the disk at his own blue line and going up ice to tap it into an empty net with 57.9 seconds remaining in the season. With 28 saves, Eamon McAdam earned his 17th win of they year; it was the 30th of his junior career.
The Black Hawks begin a best-of-five first round playoff series against the Fargo Force on Wednesday. The teams will play Game Three at Young Arena Sunday at 3:05 PM. Tickets for that contest will be available from the Black Hawks Box Office and online beginning Tuesday.
