Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks rode a three-goal first period to a 4-1 Tuesday night win against the Sioux City Musketeers at Young Arena.
The result moved Waterloo within three points of Sioux City for second place in the United States Hockey League Western Conference. It also yielded a split in the 2023/24 head-to-head series. The Musketeers had won twice on home ice earlier in the season before two Black Hawks wins in a four-day span, beginning with a 6-2 victory on Saturday.
Waterloo stopped an early Sioux City power play opportunity Tuesday; then the Hawks took the lead on their first advantage at 10:08. Holding the puck in the offensive zone for more than a minute uninterrupted, Myles Hilman eventually rifled a shot from the left circle which had enough to get through Samuel Urban and roll across the goal line.
The Hawks struck for two more in the final four minutes before the break. Mobbing the front of the net at 16:02, Jakub Altrichter got the last touch on a puck trickling through Urban's pads. Gavin Lindberg added one more goal 1:33 before intermission. John Mustard's pointblank shot was deflected to Lindberg in the left circle, leaving him with an open side.
The 3-0 lead held for all of the second and nearly half of the third before Sioux City drew back a goal with 10:07 remaining. Brian Nicholas received a long pass at the Hawks' line, accelerated, and lifted in a shot off Calvin Vachon's glove.
However, Mustard responded in transition less than three minutes later. A Will Felicio breakout gave Mustard a one-on-one look. The Hawks' leading goal-scorer backed down the defender and worked to the slot, hitting the net from between the hashmarks at 12:40.
Sioux City spent more than three minutes with a sixth attacker at the end of the game, but Vachon stopped everything and finished with 28 saves on 29 Musketeer shots.
The Black Hawks conclude a four-game homestand on Friday against the Green Bay Gamblers. The game is happening on National Pizza Day, presented by Kwik Star. It will also be Pack the House for Teagan Night, with discounted tickets available to benefit the Teagan Damme ALD medical fund.
