Hawks open championship series with win

South Bend, IN - The phrase, "One must crawl before one can walk", should be the credo the of South Bend Silver Hawks live by as they look to capture their first Midwest League crown in 13 years. Tuesday night at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium, the Hawks took their first step, defeating the Wisconsin Timberrattlers 6-4, taking a one game to none lead in the best of five series.

After the Timberrattlers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Hawks manufactured a run tying the game in the bottom of the inning. Emilio Bonifacio opened with a walk and with two out, stole second base. With Cesar Nicolas at the dish, Bonifacio advanced to third on a wild pitch by Wisconsin starting pitcher Mark Lowe. Nicolas then came through with a run scoring single down the left-field line to even the game at one.

The Hawks increased their lead in the fourth. With one retired, Mark Reynolds belted a home run to left field, his first hit of the post-season, moving the Hawks to a 2-1 lead. Jereme Milons followed with a single to left center field and after Brandon Simon struck out, Emilio Bonifacio homered down the left field line edging the Hawks further in front at 4-1.

Augie Murillo's triple to left center field scored Cesar Nicolas who reached on a base hit to open the third frame and the hawks had a comfortable 5-1.

However, Wisconsin cut the Hawks lead in the fourth on a Matt Tuiasosopo's home run and an Oswaldo Navarro run producing single narrowing the Hawks margin to 5-3.

The Timberrattlers got closer at 5-4 in the visitor's sixth inning on Mike Wilson's run scoring single, but the Hawks responded in the seventh when a Carlos Gonzales double to right field plated Alberto Gonzales after his leadoff single in the home half of the seventh.

South Bend's Kellen Raab (2-0) was the winner, while Mark Lowe (0-2) suffered the loss. Matt Elliott claimed his second save of the playoffs.

The Silver Hawks (5-0) continue the Midwest League Championship Series Wednesday night at the Cove when they face the Wisconsin Timberrattlers (4-2) in game two of the best of five series. First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM.
