Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-If your phone rings in the evening, there might be a Waterloo Black Hawk on the line.
Last Thursday, Black Hawk players Keegan Meuer, Eddie Olczyk, Ben Miller, and Parker Milner were among the volunteers for the Cedar Bend Humane Society's Capital Campaign Phone-a-thon. The team and other volunteers called shelter supporters to secure donations for a new adoption center adjacent to the Humane Society's current facility. Another group of players plans to volunteer Tuesday evening.
"They were a great help," said Humane Society spokesperson Autumn Ewoldt, "They generated about $2,000 in pledges that night and helped spread the word about the project."
Ewoldt said the planned adoption center will be much more spacious. The current facility has been in use since 1962. If the project progresses as planned, a ground-breaking for the new, $900,000 building could happen later this spring. In 2008, the Cedar Bend Humane Society provided a temporary home for over 10,000 animals. For more information about the shelter, visit cedarbendhumane.org.
Each year, Black Hawk players spend hundreds of hours working on various community service projects throughout the Cedar Valley.
"We want to develop good citizens as well as good skaters," said Waterloo Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "Some of our guys get pretty competitive since we keep a tally of the hours volunteered and then hand out a Community Service Award each spring."
Other Black Hawks community service projects include visits to schools, skating with disabled children, and occasionally working as honorary waiters at local restaurants, collecting tips for local causes and non-profit organizations.
