Hawks Extend Arena Lease

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks and the City of Waterloo extended their current lease for five years Monday at a meeting of the Waterloo City Council. The agreement will carry through the 2013-2014 season, including the Black Hawks' 50th year in Waterloo, which will be marked in 2011-2012.

The unanimous resolution was passed with Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley, General Manager of Business Operations Doug Miller, and Waterloo Leisure Services Director Paul Huting all on hand.

"We are excited about this agreement and look forward to celebrating 50 years of hockey in Waterloo," said Miller. "There is no better place to play and we look forward to bringing exciting hockey to the Cedar Valley for many, many years to come."

Addressing the council, Mayor Tim Hurley said hockey games in Waterloo are as exciting as a major league sporting event.

The Black Hawks have played in Young Arena since moving from McElroy Auditorium during the 1994-1995 season. The first USHL game played at 125 Commercial Street was January 14, 1995 against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Other notable events at the arena include:

March 1995 - Midwest High School Hockey League State Championship Tournament.

January 23, 1996 - USHL All Star Game.

December 14, 1997 - First UNI Men's and Women's Basketball games at Young Arena.

March 1998 - NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships.

January 1999 - Iowa Figure Skating Championships.

April 29, 2000 - Republican State Convention.

March 2001 - NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships.

February 2003 - Midwest High School Hockey League State Championship Tournament.

May 4, 2004 - Black Hawks win Clark Cup.

January 29, 2007 - USHL All Star Game.

May 2007 - USHL Final Four.

September 17, 2008 - Face Off For Flood Relief, Black Hawks v. Cedar Rapids Rough Riders.
