Hawks Dump Des Moines

Five unanswered goals by the Waterloo Black Hawks Thursday pushed the visitors to a 5-1 win in Des Moines against the Buccaneers.

The Hawks put 24 shots on net in the opening period, but the game was 1-1 after 20 minutes. Chris Knowlton sent Des Moines in front after a failed clearing attempt at 8:23. The Hawks tied the score during a power play when Eriah Hayes redirected a centering pass from Ben Miller at 15:06.

J.T. Brown scored the go-ahead goal at 6:57 of the second after Jordan Samuels-Thomas stole a puck deep in the Des Moines zone. One minute and 14 seconds later, Samuels-Thomas added to the lead. The Hawks also killed off two five-on-three Des Moines power plays in the second, totaling 2:51 out of the 20 minute frame.

It was Waterloo adding to the lead on the power play with the second of the night from Samuels-Thomas 38 seconds into the final period. Scott Pavelski capped the scoring at 8:51. Parker Milner made 24 saves for Waterloo.

The Hawks are at home Friday hosting the Indiana Ice at 7:05. The first 1,000 fans will receive Black Hawk player cards from iWireless. The first 500 will also pick up a Black Hawks sport bottle from Veridian Credit Union.
