Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Kevin Medrano roped a tiebreaking RBI double in the ninth inning and Enrique Burgos struck out two with the tying run at third in the bottom of the inning, helping the Yakima Bears grab Game 1 of the Northwest League East Divisional Series over the Boise Hawks, 5-4, at Memorial Stadium.
Tied 4-4 in the ninth, Danny Poma legged out an infield single, narrowly beating pitcher Nathan Dorris to the bag. After being moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, Medrano lined a ball just over the head of Boise left fielder Trey Martin to give Yakima the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Albert Almora led off with an infield single, stealing second, and moving to third on a one-out wild pitch. However, Burgos struck out Willson Contreras with a high-fastball on the tenth pitch of the at bat, then got Martin swinging to give the Bears their first playoff win since 2000.
Yakima took an early 1-0 lead on a Boise throwing error in the first - as Joe Loftus scored from second when an errant throw by Marco Hernandez sailed into right field.
Bears starter Blake Perry was cruising into the fourth, striking out seven, but a leadoff triple by Hernandez and a pair of two out walks loaded the bags for Rock Shoulders, who hit a 3-2 curveball deep over the right field wall to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.
The visitors would tie the game with three in the sixth - one on a Loftus RBI double, one on a bases loaded hit by pitch to Josh Parr, and a third when Ronnie Freeman scored on a passed ball.
R.J. Hively struck out three in two innings to get the win for Yakima, with Yogey Perez-Ramos and Medrano each recording two hits. Hernandez went 2-for-4 in the loss for the Hawks, who fanned a season-high 15 times.
Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night at Yakima County Stadium, with Tayler Scott meeting Daniel Watts at 8:05 p.m. (MT) The game can be heard live on 1350 KTIK-AM with Mike Safford calling the action.
