Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Daytona Beach Hawgs have shored up their preseason roster with three players with previous experience -- including one with National Football League game time -- under Head Coach/General Manager Ervin Bryson.
Free safety Marcus Washington, strong safety Bobby Bass and offensive lineman Anthony Nobles, all of whom played for Bryson last season with the Sioux City (Iowa) Bandits, have joined the National Indoor Football League expansion franchise.
"We've stepped it up a notch on defense with Washington and Bass,'' Bryson said. "With Nobles joining Tommy Moody, Steve Canidate and Terrance Butler, we have one of the strongest offensive lines in the league."
Washington, a sixth round draft pick for the New England Patriots in 1999, played five games for the Cleveland Browns in 2001 as well as three seasons in the Canadian League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Ottawa Renegades. An All-Big 12 Conference defensive back at Colorado, Washington was the 1995 Cotton Bowl MVP with an interception in the Buffalos' 38-6 rout of Oregon.
He was Sioux City's second-leading tackler last season with 51.5. In the Bandits' playoff loss to Omaha, Washington registered 11 tackles and a safety.
Bass had 35 tackles and two interceptions in ten games for the Bandits. His best game against Black Hills (S.D) saw him register an interception and a fumble recovery that led to Bandit scores in a 37-12 victory.
Nobles, who stands at 6-8, 380, joined the Bandits' offensive line late in the season. He is a North Carolina A&T product.
The Hawgs' first practice in pads takes place Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
The Hawgs open their 2005 season March 19 on the road against the Lakeland Thunderbolts, with the home opener slated for March 24 against the New Jersey Xtreme.
