TRENTON, NJ (June 3, 2004) - The Trenton Titans announced today that they have named Mike Haviland their new Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations.
"I was happy to be able to give Mike his start as a coach in professional hockey. I am even more thrilled to have him home as the Head Coach of the Titans," said Geoffrey Berman, Owner & CEO. "I feel now everything is in place to obtain our ultimate goal."
"This a great day in the history of the Titans," stated President & General Manager, Rich Lisk. "With the hiring of Mike Haviland the Titans have found the perfect leader of the Titans Nation. I am, as I know our fans will be, very excited for the upcoming year."
Haviland returns to the Titans after a three-year stint as Head Coach of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies. During his time in Southern Jersey, he led the Titans' interstate rival to an overall record of 152-73-26 including an ECHL Kelly Cup Championship in 2002-03. In guiding his team to a 41-19-12 record that year, Haviland was also selected as coach of the Northern Conference in 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game in Estero, Florida.
"I'm ecstatic to be joining the Titans," said Haviland. "In my mind, this is the best organization in the ECHL and there is no place I'd rather be continuing my career. I'm look forward to working with Geoff and Rich and for much success in the future."
In his first season with the Bullies, Haviland coached the team to a 42-22-8 record in the regular season and an appearance in the Northern Conference Finals. For his efforts, he was named ECHL Coach of the Year in 2002 by The Hockey News. Haviland and his Boardwalk Bullies finished a franchise-high 47-19-6 in 2003-04 and set records for wins (47), road wins (23), points (100), fewest goals against (159), lowest goals against average (2.21) and shutouts (10).
The Middletown, NJ native becomes the fifth coach of the Trenton Titans since their inception in 1999. Haviland served for two seasons as a assistant coach for the Titans under Bruce Cassidy in 1999-2000 and Troy Ward in 2000-01, respectively. Haviland resides in Sea Girt, NJ with his wife, Lori and their three children
