Hatters Top Aces In Shootout
January 25, 2009 - Eastern Professional Hockey League (EPHL)
Brooklyn Aces News Release
Sunday afternoon at the Aviator Arena in Brooklyn, NY the Brooklyn Aces lost to the Danbury Mad Hatters 5-4 in a shootout on Youth Hockey Day presented by the Children's Sports Connection and Play-It-Again Sports of Carle Place. Things looked good for the Aces early on as Jesse Felten scored an unassisted goal just two minutes into the opening period. Eric Frank scored two goals of his own in the first period, including a power play goal on an assist from the league's leading scorer Kyle McCullough. The Aces found themselves with a 3-0 lead, 10 minutes into the first. But Danbury came back with two goals of their own from Drew Maderios and Alex Redmond to end the first period with Brooklyn leading 3-2.
The teams battled through a scoreless, but physical second period, and Brooklyn headed into the third with a one goal lead and a record of 18-0 when leading after the third period on the season. Kyle McCullough took a CJ Tozzo pass and put it past Danbury goalie Derek MacIntyre to extend the Aces' lead to two goals. But the Hatters capitalized on the powerplay late in the third on Alex Redmond's second goal of the night to cut the lead to one. Erik Kent then took a Drew Madeiros pass and tied the game with just over two minutes remaining to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Brooklyn and Danbury traded shots, and with two minutes remaining the Aces were on the power play as a result of a Hank Carisio high-sticking penalty. Derek MacIntyre turned away five Aces shots on that power play to keep the score tied, and the game headed to a shootout. Jesse Felten faked out MacIntyre to start the shootout, but his shot went wide. Hank Carisio scored the shootout's only goal to give Danbury the 5-4 victory.
The Aces are at home again on Thursday January 29 at 7:30pm against the Hudson Valley Bears. The Mad Hatters are also in action at home on Thursday at 7:30pm against the Jersey Rockhoppers.
