HarbourCats Set Team Record with Eighth-Straight Win

July 15, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

MEDFORD, Ore. -- From 8-16 to a .500 record -- that's what eight wins in a row will accomplish. Now, it's up to the Victoria HarbourCats to keep it rolling into the all-star break and the stretch run.

The HarbourCats set a franchise record on Tuesday with an 8-2 victory over the host Medford Rogues, bettering the seven-game string the club put together a year ago.

The series concludes Wednesday night at Harry and David Field in Medford, and lefty Josh Mitchell is slated to get the start for the HarbourCats.

The result, combined with other Tuesday results around the league, allows the HarbourCats to move within two games of the wildcard spot and five games of the division lead. Yakima lost 4-1 to Kitsap on Tuesday, which snapped an 11-game losing streak. Bellingham kept their winning ways, rallying with four runs for a 4-2 win over Cowlitz.

The HarbourCats scored four times in the second inning, chasing Medford starter Gabe Genter and giving a nice cushion to Victoria hurler Matt Blais. Blais, from UC_Davis, went six innings, giving up two runs and eight hits, striking out four and walking two. Tei Vanderford (Tennessee) came on in relief, earning a save with three innings of scoreless pitching.

Chase Lambert returned to the leadoff spot and was 2-5 with three runs driven in, including a two-run double in the second inning and a run-scoring single in the sixth. PJ Floyd returned to the lineup and his sac fly in the eighth extended the lead to 6-2.

Ben Polshuk added a two-run shot in the ninth, plating Austin Guibor.

The HarbourCats are home on Thursday in what is, more and more, becoming an intriguing series with the West Division-leading Bellingham Bells at Sports Traders Diamond at RAP. Games go Thursday night, Friday night, and Saturday at 1pm, with an exciting set of promotions ready to roll.

On Thursday, it's Victoria Chamber of Commerce night and Black Press will be giving away the super-duper-high-quality baseball card sets for 2015, which have special cards inserted to celebrate players who have gone on to the pro ranks, and also to recognize the three years of contributions by 'Mr. HarbourCat' himself, Alex DeGoti.

Freedom 55 will have a large group and will host a post-game party at Duke Saloon after the game.

Friday is Forces Friday with Galaxy Motors, $5 tickets for all forces members and their families, and it's Superheroes Night at the Park, presented by Superbath Mobile Car Wash, with one very dirty car getting the best wash it's ever had -- inside and out. Island Savings will be there with Simply Free Fridays giveaways, and the first 250 kids will receive comics from Curious Comics.

Saturday will see two giveaways -- water bottles from Wilson's Transportation, YYJ Shuttle and the HarbourCats, and team posters from Metropol. There will be special event ticket giveaways as well, including Eves of Destruction roller derby.
