Victoria HabourCats News Release

A big inning, two triples, and some exciting baseball was undone by a pair of bunt singles on Friday night as the HarbourCats fell to 7-12, and 4-6 at home, this West Coast League season.

In front of a crowd of 1,393, the HarbourCats put up six runs -- a Bin4 Score Four! -- in the third inning to take an 8-5 lead, but could not hang on in dropping an 11-8 result to the visiting Wenatchee AppleSox.

The AppleSox, in their first visit to Sports Traders Diamond at RAP since 2013, outhit the HarbourCats 14-7, and both teams made one error on Forces Friday with Galaxy Motors and Moon Water Lodge Game Night.

Shortstop Evan Douglas hit two home runs and drove in four runs, and Mitchell Holland was 3-5 with three runs and two driven in. Sheldon Liikala was 3-5 for Wenatchee.

Nick Meyer and AJ Alcantara had two RBIs each, and Austin Guibor was 2-5, the only HarbourCat with multiple hits.

The AppleSox scored three runs in the ninth to create separation, key to the rally was two botched defensive plays on bunts.

Josh Mitchell was the losing pitcher, while Michael Taylor earned the win with a 6.1 inning relief appearance.

Shawn Kennedy started for the HarbourCats and was lifted in the third inning after giving up seven hits and five runs. Henry Omana threw five effective innings -- giving up back-to-back home runs for his only runs allowed -- before Mitchell, Nick Wojtysiak and Kyle Francis took their turns.

The two teams meet again Saturday (5:30pm gates, 6:35pm first pitch) on Times Colonist game night, with a special pre-game first pitch recognizing a local hero. On Sunday, it's Read Society's 50-50 game with the first-ever Barclay's Fine Custom Jewelry Diamond Dig taking place after the game, hosted by Mira Laurence, a ground-breaking female broadcaster whose work in the community is well-known on Vancouver Island.

Sunday's game is at 1pm.

The HarbourCats are hosting their Canada Series on Tuesday, June 30 -- a fireworks night, starting at 6:35pm, and then at 1pm on Wednesday, July 1 with Victoria Skydiving Club getting things going. The HarbourCats are hosting the Langley Sr. Blaze, last year's Canadian Champions.
