Green Bay Rockers News Release
Frogville, WI - June 27th, 2011 - The Green Bay Bullfrogs won on a walk-off two-run home run by Mitch Haniger. With the Bullfrogs down by one run entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bomber closer Kristian Calibuso walked the lead-off hitter Jacob May. After moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Billy Moon, Mitch Haniger hit a line drive to left centerfield that appeared to bounce off the wall and possibly the scoreboard to come back into the field of play. May scored easily as Haniger reached third ahead of the throw.
After the play was dead both umpires, Cody Oaks and Jake Dallas, came together to discuss the call. Neither umpire had made a definitive call when the play happened. They discussed the call for over two minutes before they determined that the ball cleared the fence and then bounced back into the field of play. The decision gave the 'Frogs a 6-5 win.
With nine games left in the first half, Green Bay is two games back of first place, a half game back of the Mallards who they play three times beginning on Wednesday, and they are tied with the Bombers heading into the finale on Tuesday.
Green Bay loaded the bases in the first inning but scored just one run on a passed ball. The bigger result of the inning was that Battle Creek's starter Troy Forton threw exactly 35 pitches in the first frame. By Northwoods League rules, he is not allowed to come out for another inning forcing the Bombers to go to the bullpen. The Battle Creek bullpen however was outstanding. They allowed two runs in the second inning, but they did not allow another hit until the seventh.
The Bombers were in the lead for most of the game. They scored three runs in the second inning on a solo home run from Bryce Redeker and a bloop RBI single from Alex Robinson. They took the lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, but Green Bay's starter Mark Garcia would not allow any further damage. In the fourth the Bombers took a 5-3 lead on an RBI double off the bat of Jordan Dean that knocked the starter Garcia out of the game. Cory Kyle came in and loaded the bases but did not allow a run as the Green Bay bullpen threw 5.2 scoreless innings on the arms of Kyle, Andy Hunter and Kyle Lindquist.
The 'Frogs tied the game in the seventh on an RBI double from Duncan McAlpine. It was the first hit for Green Bay in 18 hitters. In the eighth, Green Bay had the tying runner at third base with one out, but could not get him home.
Green Bay and Battle Creek conclude their two game series on Tuesday at 7:05 pm. Individual, group, season tickets and seven game all you can eat plans are available by calling 920-497-7225 or by logging on to www.greenbaybullfrogs.com for more information.
