Hammock's Homerun Helps Sidewinders Edge Las Vegas 5-4

Tucson, AZ - A Robby Hammock solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference in a 5-4 win against Las Vegas on Sunday night.

Tucson starter Esmerling Vasquez got in trouble early by hitting the first batter he faced. Vasquez then gave up two runs in the first when Terry Tiffee hit an RBI single to center and then later scored off a Jamie D'Antona throwing error.

Tucson was able to come back in the third inning by scoring one run off a Tim Raines, Jr. RBI single to right scoring Emilio Bonifacio from second. The Sidewinders took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning after a Jesus Merchan sacrifice fly and a Vasquez RBI line drive single.

Las Vegas tied it in the seventh inning with a two out RBI single by Rex Rundgren scoring Angel Chavez from second.

The Sidewinders regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh when D'Antona hit a grounder past the second baseman, which scored Trent Oeltjen making it a 4-3 ball game. Hammock's blast followed in the bottom of the 8th to push the lead to two runs.

Las Vegas scored one run in the ninth off an Angel Chavez grounder but were unable to tie or take the lead off of Emiliano Fruto who earned his first save of the season.

The Sidewinders will face Las Vegas in the third game of the series on Monday at 7:00 PM. RHP Yusmeiro Petit (2-3, 4.58) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Jon Meloan (4-6, 4.29) will start for the 51s. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
