Alabama Hammers News Release
Despite being outscored 30-14 in the fourth quarter, the Alabama Hammers scored its final touchdown of the night with 43 seconds remaining and then hung on for dear life as the Venom missed a 38-yard field goal on the game's final play giving the Alabama Hammers (2-1) a 55-52 victory over the Nashville Venom (1-2) at the Von Braun Center.
"It's a great win as the game went back and forth throughout the entire game," said Scott Sharp head coach of the Hammers. "This is what Hammers football is all about, but I don't know if I could handle much more of this exciting action. I hope the fans enjoyed it."
The Hammers led 34-22 at halftime holding the visiting Venom scoreless in both the second and third quarters. The Venom scored three touchdowns, including one on a 41-yard fumble return by Kenny Veal, and an Uno in the fourth quarter to actually take the lead with little more than two minutes remaining. The Hammers kept their cool under pressure and scored with 43 seconds left on the clock on a Garret Sutphen to Charle McClain 4-yard pass.
In the frantic last minutes of the contest before a large standing and cheering crowd, great defensive plays by the Hammers held the Venom causing the defending PIFL Champions to attempt the possible game tying kick by Christian Reed, which went wide right giving the ecstatic Hammers' crowd a finish for the ages.
"It's a great win as our guys kept competing, didn't panic and some make some great plays at the end," added Sharp after the Hammers season home opening win.
The Hammers were led by Sutphen (25-47/331) and receivers Mico McSwain (13/151/2 TDs) and McClain (11/168/4 TDs). The Venom were led by Charles McCullum (23/40/7 TDs) and receivers Jordan Jolly (10/120/2 TDs) and Zach Ducker (9/122/3 TDs).
