Alabama Hammers News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Things finally came together for the Alabama Hammers. Quarterback Bill Ashburn threw seven touchdown passes - three apiece going to Maurice Dupree and Mico McSwain - as the Hammers closed out a 52-44 victory over Carolina before 2,040 fans Friday night at the Von Braun Center's Propst Arena.
Alabama improved to 2-5 on the Southern Indoor Football League season as Ashburn completed 22 of 39 passes for 282 yards and two interceptions to go along with the seven touchdowns. Carolina dropped to 1-6 with Antonio Miller throwing for 240 yards and five scores, but he was picked off three times - twice by Hammers veteran defensive back Demetrius Derico in his season debut.
McSwain led Alabama with 11 receptions for 145 yards and Charles McClain had seven with a touchdown. Cooter Arnold paced the Speed with 11 catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
The Hammers looked good early and kept that pace for the majority of the game, getting Ashburn first half hookups with Dupree and McSwain - with his 45-yard touchdown making it 28-17 Alabama with 2:04 left in the first half.
The Speed responded with a score, but McClain hauled in a 23-yarder from Ashburn in the final seconds of the first half for a 35-23 halftime lead.
Ashburn's 31-yard pass to McSwain and the last of Kenny Spencer's seven extra points on the night pushed the Hammers lead to 19 points with just over a minute to go in the third quarter.
Spencer's 24-yard field goal made it a 52-37 game with 8:05 left to play and the Hammers held on from there.
Alabama hosts the Mobile Sharks at 7:30 next Saturday night at the Von Braun Center.
