Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - What a difference a week makes! The Corpus Christi Hammerheads (6-5) took advantage of 6 interceptions to defeat the Louisiana Swashbucklers (9-3) 62-51 at the American Bank Center to clinch a spot in the 2011 SIFL playoffs.
The game started off in an ominous fashion when WR Keith Smith fumbled on the first play from scrimmage which Swashbucklers Linebacker Chris Hudler returned 4 yards for the games first score. The Hammerheads would answer back a minute and half later when QB Anthony Andre hit WR Nathaniel Dunn with a 31 yard TD pass, the first of three TD receptions for Dunn. The teams would close the First Quarter in a 6-6 tie. Corpus Christi would add two more scores in the second to head to the locker room at the half up 21-6.
Perhaps the most surprising story of the first half was the 5 interceptions thrown by Louisiana QB Ben McLaughlin. McLaughlin had only thrown 5 interceptions all season long coming into the game and his lack of mistakes has been a big key in the Swashbucklers success.
"I was happy with the way we played tonight", said Hammerheads Head Coach Dustin Almond. "We started out slow but our offense got in sync and the defense was solid all night long".
Hammerheads DB Rueben Flowers had his best game of the season recording three picks, one of which was a 27 yard TD return, 7.5 5 tackles, and one pass breakup.
Corpus Christi returns to the ABC Saturday night to take on the Abilene Ruff Riders in the regular season finale. Kickoff for Saturday's game is set for 7:05pm. Tickets start at just $10 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, the American Bank Center box office or by calling the Hammerheads at (361)814-PASS (7277). The game can also be heard locally on Sports Radio Corpus Christi, 1230am, beginning at 6:45pm.
