Hammerheads seeing Green

January 27, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release

Corpus Christi, TX- Heading into his sixth season in professional football, Mike Green has learned a thing or two about football along the way. An offensive MVP in NFL Europe and four years with the Tennessee Titans to his credit, Mike Green is no slouch when it comes to the game of football. Green looks to lend his many talents to the Hammerheads this year and hopefully be the final piece that brings the hardware home to Corpus Christi.

Mike Green is a special kind of athlete, and one needs to look no further than his impressive resume to see that. Green first excelled in football at Klein High in Houston as a running back in the early nineties, where he set a school record for career rushing yards with 5,505 and also set the state's sixth most single-season rushing total in history with 2,284, earning him All-State Honors that year. He then went on to become an All-American at Blinn, where he set school records for touchdowns in a season as well as touchdowns in a career. Mike's raw talent and hard work at Blinn brought him home in 1998 when he transferred to the University of Houston. As a back-up at U of H to Ketric Sanford, Mike wowed his coaches in 1998 by averaging over 4 yards per rush in limited playing time. Then in 1999, while sharing time at tailback with Sanford, he was able to average almost 6 yards per carry.

After his collegiate success Mike then set his sights on a pro career. Most NFL scouts had his style of play pinned as being better suited for the fullback position in the NFL. They also likened his game to that of Steelers running back Jerome Bettis. One scout was quoted as saying that he "has drawn these comparisons to Bettis for his low center of gravity and fierce determination behind his runs, he waits for his blocks to develop and has the burst to turn the corner, he has great stamina and loves to punish defenders that get in his way up the middle." Mike was drafted as the 7th pick in the 7th round of the 2000 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. Mike was excited to get a chance to prove that he had what it took to make it as an NFL player. As a Fullback for the Titans, Mike received limited playing time but performed well when he did have a chance to play. In 2001, however, Mike was assigned to the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe by the Titans. Mike exploded for the Dragons, scoring four touchdowns, and throwing for another in one game against Berlin and racked up over 1,000 yards that year and was named League Offensive MVP at the end of the season.

Mike spent last year playing for the San Angelo Stampede of the IFL, where he played Linebacker and Fullback. No matter which side of the ball he ends up playing on this year, Hammerhead's fans should just happy to hear that he will be on our side in 2005. Look for great things from Mike and the rest of the Hammerheads this year and get ready to Reel In the Action!
