Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release

Corpus Christi, TX: The Hammerheads continued their home dominance Sunday afternoon by sweeping the 3 game season series against the Austin Turfcats 27-13 and got their record back to the .500 mark on the campaign at 5-5. The Hammerheads won their third consecutive game overall and fourth straight at the American Bank Center.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Turfcats opened the scoring at the 14:39 mark of the second with a 15 yard field goal by Darren Brown. The lead wouldn't hold up for long however as the Hammerheads answered back with a three yard run by Redford Borel just over three minutes later capping off a 6 play 40 yard drive.

Turfcats running back Keith Clay would put Austin back in front with a three yard score of his own giving the Cats a 10 - 6 lead. That would be the last time on the game that Austin would hold. Fred Wallace's 1 yard run in the second and 9 yard run in the third would put Corpus Christi in the lead for good.

"This was another great effort by the "D" and the running game", said Head Coach Stephen Fillmore. "They are playing at a high level right now".

Austin never could get in sync on offense all night behind QB Cedrick Welch. Welch, who is listed on the Cat's roster as a linebacker, was filling in for injured QB Derron Ellis. Austin head coach said before the game that Welch was the best athlete on his roster and gave the team the best chance to win. Welch however was inconsistent all night and struggled with his decision making throughout the game.

The win keeps the Hammerheads hopes of hosting a post season game alive and moves the team to 1.5 games behind the San Angelo Stampede Express for second place in the division. San Angelo lost Saturday to Wichita 42-35. San Angelo still has to play the Hammerheads in Corpus Christi as well on June 12th.

"All we can do is keep winning and see where we end up", said Fillmore.

The Hammerheads hit the road again next Saturday to take on the West Texas Roughnecks. Fans can follow the Action on ESPN Corpus Christi, 1230AM, 96.1FM and 103.3FM. The broadcast begins at 6:40pm with Scott Howe.

The Hammerheads return to the American Bank Center on Sunday Jun 6th against the Abilene Ruff Riders. Tickets are available at American Bank Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com, or by calling the Hammerheads at (361)814-PASS (7277).
