June 21, 2007 - Eight Weeks later.....Hammerheads have won 7 straight and Swashbucklers have won 8 straight. It has been 8 weeks since these 2 teams met and it seems like it was yesterday. The Hammerheads home opener at Central Pavilion Arena on April 21st vs. the Swashbucklers and the game came down to the final play with the Swashbucklers blocking a 15 yard Rene Vasquez field goal to hold on for a 40-38 victory.
"We haven't forgotten that play and we are ready to redeem ourselves," stated Hammerheads Wide Receiver Toric Goins. The Hammerheads started out the game on April 21st very sluggish and had to make a late charge to get the opportunity to win. "The game comes down to us executing our game plan, if we do that than we should be fine," stated Head Coach Jason McKinley. The Swashbucklers are 10-0 and are coming off of a 50-43 win over the Katy Ruff Riders this past Saturday. The Hammerheads are 8-1 and are coming off of a bye week a week after they defeated the Alaska Wild 62-32.
Inside the Numbers: Swashbucklers QB Freddie Harrison had thrown 2 interception in his first 6 games of the season and has thrown 5 in his last 2 games. The Corpus Christi Hammerheads have the #1 scoring offense in the league averaging 61.6 points per game. Louisiana has the #1 defense in the IFL giving up only 30 points per game. Averaging 95.8 yards per game rushing the Hammerheads lead the IFL. The Swashbucklers have a plus 31 turnover margin, which is almost unheard of.
#1 and #2: Hammerheads QB Wesley Cooper is the IFL's #1 rated QB with a rating of 102.3 and Swashbucklers QB Freddie Harrison is #2 with a rating of 100.2. Running Wild:
Hammerheads Wide Receiver Justin Hardman and Fullback Redford Borel are #1 and #2 in the IFL in Rushing with Hardman leading the IFL with 335 yards and Borel a respective 243 good enough for 2nd in the IFL. Hardman has 19 Td's and Borel has 12.
Swashbucklers Defensive End Kendall Shello leads the IFL in sacks with 10.5. Louisiana has the top two tackling defensive backs in Mike English 56.5 and Damien Huren 49 tackles.
Kicking Game: Rene Vasquez vs. Whitney Hillin
Vasquez is 59-69 on extra points for 85.5 percent
Hillin is 60-67 on extra points for 89.5 percent
Did You Know? Hammerheads Defensive Back Carl Greenwood and Swashbucklers Defensive Back Damien Huren are tied for the IFL lead in interceptions with 10 each.
Injury Report: Swashbucklers Defensive End Anthony Camp who is 2nd in the IFL in Sacks with 6.5 despite missing 3 games has been placed on Long Term IR and will miss at least the next 4 games.
