Hammerheads Face Biggest Test of Season

April 21, 2011 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release

Corpus Christi, TX - The Hammerheads, (2-2), will head to Houston on Saturday looking to do something that nobody has been able to do in 2011, beat the Houston Stallions, (5-0).

After a rocky start to the season, the Hammerheads offense has come to life in the past two games scoring 70 and 86 points respectively. The offensive explosiveness coincided with the hiring of Dustin Almond to replace Stephen Fillmore as head coach. Prior to the change the team was averaging 116 yards of total offense and 23 points per game with 5 turnovers. Under Almonds guidance, Corpus Christi is averaging 273.5 yards and 78 points per game while the turnovers have dropped to an average of 1.5 per game.

"We're getting better", said Almond. "We are still leaving points on the field and making some mental mistakes, but the progress has been there". "Now we need to eliminate the bad penalties and not help extend our opponents drives", he added.

Extending Stallion drives is something that the Hammerheads must not allow this week. The Stallions come into the game with the leagues top scoring offense and second best passing offense. Last week against Rio Grande Valley, the Stallions took advantage of Magic mistakes in the 4th quarter to stay undefeated winning 54 - 37.

Almond is very aware of the Stallions ability to take advantage of mistakes. "We can't commit undisciplined penalties or turn the ball over, they score off of every mistake an opponent makes", he said.

Saturday night's game will be the first of a home and home match up with the Stallions with Houston coming in to play Corpus Christi on April 30th at the American Bank Center. This week's game can be heard locally on Sports Radio Corpus Christi, 1230am, beginning at 6:45pm.

Tickets for the game on April 30th start at only $10 and are available at Ticketmaster, Tickermaster.com, The American Bank Center Box Office, or by calling the Hammerheads at 814-PASS (7277).
