Hammerheads Continue Home Dominance

Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release

Corpus Christi, TX: The Hammerheads won their fifth straight home game Sunday afternoon at the American Bank Center 49-46 over the Abilene Ruff Riders to run their season record to 6-6 and move one step closer to the 2010 IFL post season berth.

The game was really a tale of two halves for each team. The Hammerheads fumbled on the first plays of their first two possessions to put themselves in a 13-0 hole. Corpus Christi would claw their way back tying the score at 13 after 30 minutes of play following a 3 yard pass from QB Wes Cooper to WR Julius Eppinger.

The Hammerheads would take control of the game in the third quarter outscoring Abilene 21-7 with the help of two Ruff Rider turnovers. The lone score in the third for Abilene came by way of a 46 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Ivory McCann. McCann has been no stranger to big kick returns at the American Bank Center. McCann thrilled crowds with big returns in 2007 and 2008 when playing for the now defunct Corpus Christi Sharks.

As good as the return was for McCann, it was his two dropped passes that would have gone for scores that ended up being the difference in the game. Abilene could never get their passing game in sync against the Hammerheads defense with Ruff Rider QB Robert Kent completing just 12 of his 36 pass attempts with 3 picks for 101 yards.

Abilene scored with no time left on the clock in the fourth to make the score look close at 49-46.

The Hammerheads will return to action at the American Bank Center Saturday Night looking to clinch a playoff spot against the San Angelo Stampede Express, while Abilene will close out their 2010 season with a road trip to Odessa to face the West Texas Roughnecks.

The Hammerheads are offering free admission Saturday night to all kids 11 and under with the purchase of a corresponding Adult ticket. To take advantage of this, fans must purchase their tickets through the Hammerheads office by calling (361)814-PASS(7277). Additionally, the first 500 kids through the door receive a replica Hammerheads Jersey.

Saturdays game can be heard on ESPN Corpus Christi, (1230AM, 96.1FM, and 103.3FM). The broadcast begins at 6:40pm.
