Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

After a tough Saturday, the Jupiter Hammerheads (5-4) bounce back to win a Sunday pitcher's duel over the St. Lucie Mets (3-6) by a score of 2-1.

The Hammerheads pitching staff was sharp on Sunday afternoon allowing just one hit and one run. Starter Jake Brooks (1-0) earned his first win of the season after pitching six impressive innings. The UCLA product allowed just one hit, but struck out five batters in his second start of the season. Before being pulled from the game, Brooks retired the last 13 batters he faced. The former 11th round draft pick now holds a 0.82 ERA across 11 innings this season.

Jupiter's bullpen kept the momentum going and didn't allow a hit across the final three frames. Justin Evans followed Brooks and pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts. Xavier Meachem was next out of the pen for a hitless eighth before closer Josh Ekness closed the door with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Both Evans and Meachem earned holds, their first of the season, while Ekness was credited with a save.

As a whole, the pitching staff walked just one batter and struck out nine batters in the series finale.

At the plate, the Hammerheads scored in the fourth and again in the sixth. Catcher Ryan Ignoffo was the first to strike with an RBI single to score Jake DeLeo. Outfielder Colby Shade drove in the winning run with a RBI single.

With the win, the Hammerheads won the six-game series over St. Lucie. Next week, Jupiter will have their first true road trip of 2024 as they visit the Gulf Coast for a new series with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels.
