Hammerheads Advance to Round Three in 2016 Open Cup
May 31, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Hammerheads play in the third round of the 2016 Open Cup series on Wednesday, June 1st against Miami FC at FIU Stadium in Miami.
The First Round, which commenced on May 11th, marked the opening stage of the tournament for 18 Premier Development League (PDL) teams, 14 National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) sides, and 14 Open Division local qualifiers. The Second Round followed on May 18th and introduces 17 USL clubs, as well as one entry each from the PDL and NPSL.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an American soccer competition open to all United States Soccer Federation affiliated teams, from amateur adult club teams to the professional clubs of Major League Soccer (MLS). The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is most commonly known as the U.S. Open Cup and is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world's third-longest-running open soccer tournament.
After completion of round two on May 18th against Miami Fusion FC, the Hammerheads set themselves up to play Miami FC on Wednesday, June 1st. Head Coach Mark Briggs stated, "Tomorrows game will be a great opportunity for our boys to put themselves against a very good team at a higher level. We have no pressure on us and we are not expected to win, but who knows. Stranger things have happened in football."
2015 Re-Cap
In 2015 the USL opened the Open Cup series by going 15-6.
The success continued in the fourth round as the USL picked up 11 more wins, taking out seven NASL squads.
During the fifth round, the USL cooled off, mostly against NASL opposition. In just their first year in existence, the Charlotte Independence survived the fifth round with a massive, 1-0, victory over the New England Revolution.
The Hammerheads will hope to continue this new tradition against the Miami FC, after winning 6-0 in the second round this year.
Cheer on the Hammerheads as they take on Miami FC tomorrow night with an 8pm kick-off. You can watch the game online by visiting http://www.miamifc.com/match-center.
