Hall of Famer Hawkins grandson to play for Xplosion

PITTSBURGH, December 8, 2006 - The Pittsburgh Xplosion professional basketball team tapped into the City's rich basketball history today announcing the signing of Shawn Hawkins to a contract for the 2006-07 season, pending league approval. Hawkins is the grandson of Basketball Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins.

Connie Hawkins played for the Pittsburgh Rens in the ABL and was named MVP after guiding the Pittsburgh Pipers to the 1968 ABA Championship. He also spent seven seasons in the NBA. The four-time All-Star played with the Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Lakers. The New York playground legend also spent two years touring with the Harlem Globetrotters. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992.

A 6-6 forward, Shawn Hawkins is a 2006 graduate of Long Beach State. As a senior he was named All-Big West Second Team after averaging 12.5 points. After graduation he played in the prestigious Southern California Summer Pro League and then briefly in Germany. The Pittsburgh native was an area prep star at Schenley High School capturing First Team All-State honors.

In other moves the Xplosion announced the signing of Harry Good, released Coleco Buie and placed Greg Jenkins on injured reserve.
