West Haven- The New Haven County Cutters announced today catcher Matt Hackney joins the Cutters for the 2006 season. Hackney played last season at Western New England College. The four-year starter ranks among one of the top players in School history.
Hackney compiled a career .322 batting average in 163 games; he ranks second all time at Western New England College with 188 hits. The Bristol, Connecticut native has won a slue of awards including All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) First Team 2003, 2004, All-GNAC Second Team 2002, 2005, All-GNAC Tournament Team 2004, New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Division III Second Team 2004, Western New England College Silver Slugger Award 2002, 2003.
Matt's defense is his specialty committing only 4 errors in 36 games last season, but his offensive numbers were just as impressive. Hackney had a .388 on base percentage, and also stole 12 bases in 13 attempts. Hackney's well roundedness as a player will be a great addition to the Cutters roster.
The Cutters kick off the 2006 season on May 25th as they travel to take on the Brockton Rox. The Cutters will play their home opener on May 29th against 2005 Champion, Worcester Tornados.
