BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (Jan. 8, 2009) - President George W. Bush has announced his intention to appoint 45 individuals and designate two individuals, including the appointment of former Fire defender Diego Gutierrez to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
The Council is an advisory committee comprised of volunteer citizens who advise the President about matters pertaining to physical activity, fitness, and sports in America. Gutierrez's appointment is through May 3, 2010.
"This is such an honor for me and my family," says Gutierrez. "As a soccer player, to sit on a committee with the President and Secretary of Health and Human Services is humbling, but I look forward to the implementation of our collaborative ideas and programs that will ultimately help the American people."

Gutierrez also participated in the Bill and Melinda Gates Malaria Forum, received the U.S. Soccer Foundation MLS Humanitarian of the Year award in 2007, as well as teamed up with Lt. Gutierrez retired from his professional soccer playing career in November of 2008 following the Fire's season.
