BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (Jan. 8, 2009) - President George W. Bush has announced his intention to appoint 45 individuals and designate two individuals, including the appointment of former Fire defender Diego Gutierrez to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

The Council is an advisory committee comprised of volunteer citizens who advise the President about matters pertaining to physical activity, fitness, and sports in America. Gutierrez's appointment is through May 3, 2010.

"This is such an honor for me and my family," says Gutierrez. "As a soccer player, to sit on a committee with the President and Secretary of Health and Human Services is humbling, but I look forward to the implementation of our collaborative ideas and programs that will ultimately help the American people."

A 13 year veteran of the league and "Major League Soccer Original", Gutierrez has served as a leader both on and off the field during his career. In 2007, Gutierrez joined the fight against malaria through the United Nations Foundation's "Nothing But Nets" campaign. For his dedication to the cause, Gutierrez received an invitation from President Bush and the First Lady to a visit in the Rose Garden on "Malaria Awareness Day". Gutierrez also participated in the Bill and Melinda Gates Malaria Forum, received the U.S. Soccer Foundation MLS Humanitarian of the Year award in 2007, as well as teamed up with Lt. Governor Pat Quinn to spread awareness throughout Illinois in 2008. Most recently, Gutierrez was recognized with the Commissioner's Award at the 2008 MLS Gala Awards Ceremony, an honor that is presented annually to the group or individual that has made a difference and contributed significantly to the league and the sport in America.

Gutierrez retired from his professional soccer playing career in November of 2008 following the Fire's season.
