Gulls Season Ends with 7-4 Loss

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls (21 - 23) saw their season end on Wednesday night after falling to Mystic (22 - 21) in a winner take all game by a score of 7-4. With Wednesday's win, Mystic earned the final playoff spot in the Southern Division.
Nic Enright got the start for Newport, giving up three runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings. Austin Michel picked up the loss for the Gulls, giving up three runs in his inning of work in the eighth. The winning pitcher for the Schooners was Thomas Girard, who pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out three.
Jack Gethings led the charge for the Gulls offense, hitting the game-tying 2-run home run in the sixth. Mystic later recaptured the lead after a Chris Winkel double and a Brett Rodriguez RBI single. Newport would later tie things up in the eighth on a Jack Blomgren infield single. Chris Winkel struck again in the top of the ninth with a two-run home run to give Mystic a 7-4 lead.
Newport tallied a total of eight hits against the Schooners, Tim Tawa chipped in two hits to raise his final batting average .336, leading all Gulls with at least 100 at bats.
Newport finished their season fourth in the Southern Division, missing the postseason for the second consecutive year and second time in franchise history.
