Newport Gulls News Release
DANBURY, Conn. - Newport (14 - 17) took down the Danbury Westerners (13 - 19) by a score of 8-5 to solidify a season-series win against the Southern Division foe. Jake Eder earned his first victory of the summer giving up three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts over the course of 5.0 innings. Brian Rodriguez wore the loss for Danbury as he surrendered five runs on six hits in 5.0 innings on the mound.
Tim Tawa wasted no time giving Newport an early lead as he took the first pitch of the ballgame over the fence for his fourth homerun of the season. Danbury would answer two innings later with two runs on four singles in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Stevie Mangrum launched his team-leading ninth homer of the summer over the right field fence to knot the game at 2-2, and the Gulls added three more in the top of the fifth taking advantage of two walks and an error by Danbury.
The Westerners would respond with one of its own in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Jake Frasca, but Newport did not let up. Jayson Gonzalez and Dalton Reed both homered later in the game to give Newport sufficient insurance to hold off the Westerners' late comeback.
Out of the bullpen, Newport's Austen Michel, Mike Kirian, and Nate Wrighter combined to give up two runs in 4.0 innings while walking just two and striking out five. Offensively, Newport's power has surged as of late, hitting nine homers in its last three games. The Gulls currently lead the league with 40 long-balls on the season. Tawa finished with a two-for-three night while Stevie Mangrum went three-for-five with two RBI and two runs-scored.
The Gulls will be back in action on Monday night when the Plymouth Pilgrims (19 - 12) come to town for the fifth meeting of the season. First pitch from Cardines Field is set for 6:35 p.m. on American Heroes Night where all police, fire, and EMT personnel will receive free admission to the ballpark courtesy of Newport Gulls Baseball.
