Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals hit a pair of home runs, including a go-ahead shot from Gabriel Guerrero, to take a 5-4 seven-inning victory over the Mississippi Braves on Thursday at The Ballpark at Jackson. Earlier in the day, Mississippi picked up a 6-4 triumph in a nine-inning game that started on Wednesday before it was suspended due to rain.
Jabari Henry hit Jackson's first home run of the season in the second inning of the nightcap to give the Generals a 2-1 lead. The Braves had a one-run edge after an RBI double by Chris O'Dowd earlier in the frame, but Guerrero reached for Jackson on a one-out double and moved to third base during a groundout by Dario Pizzano. Henry touched Mississippi's Tyrell Jenkins for a two-run blast to take the lead.
Mallex Smith helped Mississippi scored the next three runs, boosting the Braves to a 4-2 advantage. Smith scored on a Kevin Ahrens groundout in the third inning to tie the contest. In the fourth, Smith singled and drove in O'Dowd and Emerson Landoni.
Jackson stepped up defensively in the top of the sixth inning before reclaiming the lead later in the frame. Smith flied out to Guerrero near the right-center field warning track, and Matt Lipka tried to score from second base. Guerrero and Tyler Smith relayed the ball to Carlton Tanabe at home plate to retire Lipka for a double play. Jackson closed its gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out error prior to Guerrero's two-run homer that helped the Generals to their margin of victory.
Moises Hernandez improved to 1-0 with his first win of the season for Jackson (2-4). Jenkins registered a quality start for Mississippi (3-4), but three unearned runs pushed him to a loss and an 0-1 record.
Thursday's action started in the third inning of a suspended game that started on Wednesday. Jackson had a 3-0 edge when play resumed, but the Braves scored six straight runs to gain control of the contest. KD Kang put Mississippi on the scoreboard with a fourth-inning single that plated Daniel Castro and put the Braves within two runs.
Mississippi took the lead for good after a four-run rally in the fifth. After back-to-back outs induced by Jackson's Scott DeCecco, Lipka extended the frame with a single. Mallex Smith followed by tying the score with a two-run blast to right field. Castro and Rio Ruiz reached safely for Seth Loman, who doubled to bring in both runners and give Mississippi a 5-3 lead.
Both teams scored in the ninth inning of the earlier contest. Mississippi added to its lead when Mallex Smith scored from first base on a double by Castro. Jackson loaded the bases and plated Jordy Lara on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Smith for its last scoring in a 6-4 loss to begin the day.
The winner of that contest was Jorge Reyes (2-0) after five shutout innings. DeCecco took the loss (0-2) while Mississippi's Ryan Kelly converted his second save of the year.
This five-game series between the Generals and the Braves resumes on Friday evening at 7:05 pm. It is a Free Cash Friday sponsored by Denny's that features cash giveaways throughout the contest and a chance for fans to possibly walk away with a heavier wallet. Tickets are available by stopping by the park, calling (731) 988.5299 or going online to jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
