On Wednesday the Fayetteville Guard signed former New Orleans Saints and Livingstone College running back Wilmont Perry. Perry comes to the Guard after having spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons with the Columbus Destroyers of the AFL. Perry finished the 2004 campaign accumulating 7 touchdowns, while catching seven balls for 73 yards and two scores with the Destroyers.
He also was a member of the af2's Cape Fear Wildcats from 2002-2003 before entering the AFL. Perry set an af2 record for rushing attempts in one season with 118 and rushing touchdowns with 28. In 28 games with the Wildcats, he rushed the ball 166 times for 692 yards and 40 touchdowns and also had eight receptions for 96 yards and one touchdown.
Perry was a 5th round selection in the 1998 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He spent the '98 and '99 season on the active roster of the Saints. In thirteen games Perry gained 302 yards on 78 carries and also had four pass receptions for 26 yards. Started at running back against Buffalo, Dallas and Atlanta finishing with a game high 96 yards on 16 carries vs. the Falcons. Perry spent the 2000 season on the Carolina Panthers practice squad.
He was the 1997 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year as a senior at Livingstone College rushing for 1,911 yards and scoring 28 touchdowns. His accomplishments also earned him 1st team All-America honors.
