Guam International Grimes Signs with Roughnecks
March 25, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
Tulsa Roughnecks FC has turned to the Guam Football Association for its latest roster addition. Head Coach David Irving announced today that defender Mason Grimes has officially joined the squad.
Grimes saw full international duty with the Guam Men's National Team last fall during the EAFF East Asian Cup. The California native started and played in all three of the matches for the "Matao," as the team finished with a 1-1-1 record but failed to advance past the group stage.
His international duty will keep him from the Roughnecks during the first week of the USL regular season. Grimes has again been called for duty with the national team for a pair of friendlies on March 28 and March 31 when Guam faces Hong Kong and Singapore.
He could also represent the country during its World Cup qualifying games in the Asian Football Confederation this summer and fall.
Grimes' grandmother was born in Guam, making him eligible to represent the "Matao" at the national level.
The 22-year-old played four seasons of college soccer for Cal State San Marcos. Seeing action in all four years with the Cougars, Grimes was a starter for the Cougars his final two years. As a junior in 2013, he started all 17 games at the center back position and helped CSUSM to 7 shutouts and a 0.86 goals against average.
In his senior season, he again anchored the Cougars backline and helped them to one of the best seasons in school history. They finished 13-4 and earned a national ranking for only the second time in the soccer team's history. From the back, he collected one goal and one assist and helped limit opponents to only 21 goals for the season.
Grimes earned all-conference honors in each of his final two collegiate seasons, collecting second-team recognition after his junior season and first-team recognition following his senior year.
