June 16, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release
Mobile, Ala. â Dan Grummitt drove in all three Orlando runs as the visiting Rays dropped the Mobile BayBears 3-2 at Hank Aaron Stadium Monday.
With the Rays trailing 2-1 in the 6th inning, Grummitt launched a two-run homer that put the Rays up 3-2. The Orlando bullpen took over from there, blanking the BayBears over the final five frames to preserve the slim lead. Grummitt's homer was his third of the series and ninth of the season, and it was the second time in the series that he single-handedly out-scored the BayBears.
Frank Moore went 3-4 with a run scored for Orlando, while Jonny Gomes went 1-4 with a 2B and run scored.
Orlando starter Travis Minix made his second spot start in a week and went 4.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Southern League home run leader Jon Knott launched his 19th homer of the season to give Mobile an early 1-0 lead off Minix in the 2nd inning. Relief pitcher Dan Guillory evened his record at 1-1 tossing three innings of scoreless relief, allowing only a pair of hits. John Benedetti (SV, 2) pitched the final two innings to preserve the win for Orlando.
Tonight's game was the final game of the first half of Southern League play. The division leaders at the end of the first half will play the division winners for the second half in the SL playoffs in September. Orlando finished the first half of the season at 32-37, 4th in the East Division. The Carolina Mudcats (affiliate of the Florida Marlins) won the East Division with a 42-26 record while the Huntsville Stars (Milwaukee Brewers) took the crown in the West with a 40-28 record. All team's win-loss records will reset for the second half to determine the 2nd-half division winners.
The Rays will depart for home following tonight's game and enjoy a league-wide off day tomorrow. Orlando then kicks off a four-game series with the Birmingham Barons on Wednesday at Cracker Jack Stadium. RHP Matt White (0-2, 5.75) will take to the hill for Orlando while RHP Mitch Wylie (1-1, 3.55) goes for Birmingham.
