Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – The BayBears concluded the first half of their season Monday night, as they fell to Orlando 3-2, in front of a crowd of 1,963 at Hank Aaron Stadium. The BayBears finish the first half at 29-39 and in last place in the West Division of the Southern League, but the team has played better of late and the mood in the clubhouse is positive going into half number two.

The BayBears scored first on Monday night as Jon Knott homered on his first swing of the night leading off the second inning. It was Knott's second homer in as many swings, going back to Sunday night as he ended the game with a long ball. Monday's homerun was his league-leading 19th. The right fielder is now just three behind the all-time, single-season record for homeruns. John Curl hit 22 for the BayBears in 1999.

Orlando tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth on a Dan Grummitt infield groundout. After Mobile retook the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the frame, Grummit hit a two-run homerun in the sixth, making the final 3-2 Orlando. The homer was Grummitt's ninth of the season and his third of the series.

BayBears starter Chris Oxspring took the loss, his first since joining the starting rotation out of the bullpen. Oxspring (3-3) allowed all three Orlando runs on six hits while striking out four.

The BayBears have Tuesday off as they travel to Chattanooga to take on the Lookouts in a four-game series. The series begins on Wednesday at 11:15 am. LHP Cory Stewart (6-4; 2.96) will get the start for Mobile against the Lookouts.
