Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Lexington County, S.C. (June 3, 2015) - The Gastonia Grizzlies did not look like a team hitting .202 coming into Wednesday's action, as they slugged 13 runs on 15 hits in a 13-5 win over the Lexington County Blowfish. The win proved to be the first win on the road for the Grizzlies in the 2015 season.
The Grizzlies jumped on starter Canaan Cropper (University of South Carolina), tagging him for seven runs through 1.1 innings. The visitors led 7-1 after two innings of play, and they never looked back.
Brennan Morgan (3-for-3, 4 RBI, run) and Alex Reynolds (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 runs) proved to be the difference for Gastonia on this night, providing most of the pop in the lineup. Reynolds knocked home a run in the first and second innings, and Morgan knocked home three in that same span.
The Blowfish chipped away at the formidable Grizzlies lead. Down 3-0 in the first, Jared Williams (University of South Carolina) and J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) slugged back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to two. Runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings trimmed the Gastonia lead to five, but the Grizzlies would take advantage of a couple of fielding miscues.
Morgan, Jackson Mims and Michael McLellan all singled to start the seventh inning. Then, Brooks Kennedy reached on an error, and was able to dust off the bases due to another error on the same play. That eventually put the game out of reach for the Blowfish, who would only tack on one more run in the game, a solo shot in the ninth inning off the bat of newcomer Connor Owings (Coastal Carolina).
Williams had the best night at the plate for the Blowfish, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. His crafty bunt-RBI single down the first base line in the fourth inning showcased a bit of his speed and finesse.
The Blowfish will look to shake this one off and play host to the Florence Redwolves, a 7:05 p.m. start on Thursday, at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Tickets are available by visiting the Blowfish website at blowfishbaseball.com, calling the box office at 803-254-FISH, and at Blowfish On Main at 101 East Main Street in Lexington, South Carolina.
