Grizzlies Out-Pitched by Wild Things

Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Washington, PA - The Gateway Grizzlies got the tying runs on base in both the eighth and ninth innings against the Washington Wild Things on Thursday night, but were ultimately shut out on the scoreboard for the first time all season in a 2-0 defeat at Wild Things Park, losing the rubber game of the midweek set.

Washington got both of their runs with two outs against Gateway starter Jason Rackers (0-1), as Nick Ward hit an RBI single to make it 1-0 in the second inning, and a Rackers wild pitch after two straight two-out singles doubled that lead to 2-0. The Grizzlies bullpen would not allow another run the rest of the game, as Rackers, Anderson DeLeon and Alec Whaley combined to retire 13 batters in a row at one point, keeping the Grizzlies within striking distance.

But Gateway could not solve Wild Things starter Kobe Foster (5-1) all night, as the southpaw retired 14 Grizzlies in a row at one point, finishing with seven two-hit shutout innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. In the eighth, a pair of two-out walks put the tying run on base against Isaac Mattson, but an Andrew Penner groundout ended that threat.

Then, in the ninth, Isaac Benard led off with a walk and Zach Racusin followed with a single to put the tying run at first base with no outs. But after a double play ball, then a walk by Trevor Achenbach to once again put the tying run on base, Lukas Young struck out Clint Freeman swinging to end the game.

The Grizzlies will continue their road trip on Friday, August 5, 2022 at Bosse Field when they take on the Evansville Otters to begin a weekend series. Manuel Rodriguez will get the start in the series opener opposite the Otters' Ryan O'Reilly, with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. CT.
