
Grizzlies come from behind to beat Mavs

The Gateway Grizzlies scored five unanswered runs to beat the Mid-Missouri Mavericks 8-6 Monday night in front of 3,415 at GMC Stadium. The Grizzlies are now 31-24. The Mavericks are 12-42.
The Grizzlies trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Phil Warren singled to start the inning, before Todd Oetting drove a ball over the right field wall to make it 6-5. Wayne Astrauskas singled, then scored on an RBI-double by Shawn Smarsh to make it 6-6. The Grizzlies added a run in the seventh on a fielder's choice by Greg Stevens to go up 7-6. Jimmy Reiter capped off the scoring with a solo home run with two outs in the eighth.
Smarsh was 3-4 with three RBIs in his first game back from an injury. He hadn't played since July 4th. Oetting was 3-4 with the home run. Astrauskas was 2-4 with an RBI. Reiter was 2-4 with the home run.
Rob Newland (1-4) picked up the win in relief. Newland pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out three. Dan Smith pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit. He struck out one.
The Grizzlies and Mavericks meet again on Tuesday night with a 7:05 game at GMC Stadium.
