Grizzles Suffer Salt Lake Sweep

April 18, 2017 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

The Fresno Grizzlies (5-7) suffered their first sweep of the 2017 season Monday night in Salt Lake City (6-6), dropping three to the Salt Lake bees with a 6-2 defeat in the series finale. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Grizzlies, capping a 2-5 road trip.

Salt Lake touched Fresno starter David Martinez for four hits and three runs in the first inning. Ryan LeMarre (2-for-3), Dustin Ackley (2-for-3) and former Grizz (2015-2016) Nolan Fontana (3-for-4) each had RBI singles for the Bees; for Fontana it was his first hit of the three-game series against his former club.

Preston Tucker extended his hit streak to eight games in the top of the second, drilling his second homer to center after a Colin Moran walk. The Grizzlies were within a run, 3-2.

Still leading by that score in the fifth, LeMarre added his second RBI of the night, a two-out single to left that scored Ackley, after he smoked a two-out double to left.

After the rocky first inning, Martinez (0-2) settled down and narrowly missed a quality start. The four runs allowed were all earned, on 10 hits and two walks. The right-hander struck out three. Salt Lake starter Manny Banuelos (2-0) also tossed six innings (4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K).

Still leading 4-2 in the eighth, the Bees added more than enough insurance with four hits and a walk. Fontana started the rally with his third hit, a double. Eric Young Jr., who went 5-for-5 with the most hits against Fresno this season, doubled home two more runs to make it 6-2. Right-hander Brooks Pounders relieved Banuelos, and pitched the final three innings for his first save.

Five hits for the Grizzlies marked a season low, and Tyler White's club-best hit streak ended at 10 games, putting Tucker's eight-game streak on top.

Fresno returns to Chukchansi Park to open an eight-game homestand on Tuesday, the first "Taco Tuesday" of 2017 and Fresno Tacos Opening Day. Probable starters are RHP Donovan Hand (0-2, 10.45) for Las Vegas, and RHP Keegan Yuhl (1-1, 8.22) for the Tacos. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. in game one of the four-game series.
