Wichita Wingnuts News Release
LINCOLN, NE- The Wichita Wingnuts won 5-4 over the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park on Thursday night.
The Wingnuts scored the winning run in the top of the ninth to take their third lead of the game and win the rubber game of their series with Lincoln.
Tied at four in the ninth, Eric Williams was hit in the back with a pitch from reliever Adam Daniels. Williams advanced to second on a hit-and-run groundball from Ryan Patterson. Daniels walked Jorge Cortes and Michael Bell back-to-back to load the bases. Daniels' first pitch to Mario Delgado sailed over his back and allowed Williams to score the go-ahead run.
Justin Dowdy slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his 15th save of the year. Dowdy struck out Rafael Alvarez, who homered off of Dowdy on Tuesday to tie the game, for the first out of the frame. Phil Hawke flew out to deep center for the second out, and then Dowdy fanned Argelis Nunez on a 96-mph fastball to nail down the win.
Nunez gave Lincoln hope in the bottom of the seventh, hitting a two-run home run to deep left-center off of Dustin Pease to tie the game at 4-4.
The Wingnuts had scored three times in the top of the sixth to go in front 4-2. Cortes led off with a line drive home run to right-center against Saltdogs' starter Jacob Marceaux to tie the game at 2-2. After Bell lined a single to right-center, Delgado flew out to deep center, signaling the end of the night for Marceaux. Facing reliever Brendon Smith, Jeff Christy doubled to the fence in left-center field to score Bell with the go-ahead run. Steve Pearson followed with a long double to right-center that played Christy and put the Wingnuts up 4-2.
The Wingnuts scored the first run of the night on a ground rule double down the left field line by Delgado in the top of the fourth. Lincoln scored two unearned runs against Wingnuts' starter Sean Teague in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.
Teague went 4.1 IP, allowing two unearned runs in a no-decision. Teague struck out four and walked four. Marceaux allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 5.1 IP, striking out five and walking one, also taking a no-decision. Cephas Howard earned the win, working 1.2 scoreless innings. Jacob Wiley also chipped in 1.2 innings of scoreless ball.
