San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Apr. 26, 2005) – San Jose QB MARK GRIEB and WR/DB RODNEY WRIGHT were today named the AFL's Offensive Player of the Week and U.S. Army Ironman of the Week, respectively, after their efforts in the SaberCats record-setting 89-41 victory over the Colorado Crush on Apr. 22.

Grieb (6-3, 208, U.C. Davis) was statistically perfect against the Crush, earning the highest possible passer rating (158.3) after completing all 15 of his passes for 331 yards, eight touchdowns with no interceptions in three quarters of play, helping San Jose post a team-record and AFL road record 89 points.

Grieb's 15-of-15 passing performance surpassed the perfect-completion game mark previously held by Carlos Garay, who went 11-of-11 for the Carolina Cobras in 2000. This marks the first time Grieb has won an AFL weekly award this year and the fourth time in his career.

For the second consecutive week, Wright (5-9, 180, Fresno St.) was named the AFL U.S. Army Ironman of the Week. In the rout of the Crush, the SaberCats rookie was a force in every aspect of the game. Wright started the scoring by breaking tackles and turning a quick 5-yard pass into a 45-yard score.

On special teams, Wright returned a missed field goal 54 yards for the touchdown, San Jose's first MFG return for a score since Clevan Thomas did it in Jun. 15, 2002. Defensively, the former Bulldog earned his first career interception which set up another San Jose touchdown. For the game Wright caught 3 passes for 81 yards and added 7.0 tackles as the starting WR/DB. This marks the second time this year that a San Jose player has earned consecutive Player of the Week honors and it is the second time Wright has won an AFL award.

The SaberCats play host to the surging Nashville Kats, who are undefeated in their last four games, on Friday, April 29. Following the battle of the Cats, the division rival Los Angeles Avengers come to town in one of the most important games of the season on Friday, May 7.
