Greyhounds Re-sign Austin

January 16, 2004 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Ohio Valley Greyhounds News Release

The Ohio Valley Greyhounds have re-signed wide receiver Willie Austin, from the University of Wisconsin. While at Wisconsin, Austin was a member of the 1999 Badger team that won the Big 10 and the Rose Bowl.

Willie played in the IFL for the Madison Mad Dogs during the 2000 season where he played wide receiver, cornerback, quarterback, and even returned kicks. He was selected first team IFL and played in the IFL Pro Bowl in Asheville, North Carolina, for the Eastern Conference All-Stars. In two games versus the Steel Valley Smash, Willie recorded seven touchdowns.

In 2001, Austin put up some impressive numbers, 60 receptions, 695 yards, and 17 touchdowns, playing wide receiver and defensive back for the Pensacola Barracudas of af2.

Willie signed with the LaCrosse Night Train of the NIFL in 2002, but left the team for the birth of his second child and did not return. Last season Willie made his triumphant return to the playing field helping the Ohio Valley Greyhounds to a second straight national championship and a perfect 17-0 season. Austin played wide receiver and defensive back for the ‘Hounds in 2003 where he snagged 34 receptions for 408 yards and 10 touchdowns. Willie also recorded 10 tackles, one interception with a 27-yard return, and forced a fumble.

Willie was recruited by several suitors, including West Virginia University, out of Miami Central High School as a quarterback, wide receiver, and safety. In Miami, Willie was trained by former Smash/Greyhound quarterback, and former Greyhound head coach Wilkie Perez.
