Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI (April 4, 2005) - The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Milwaukee Wave forward, Greg Howes, has been named Offensive Player of the Month. Howes wins the award for the second time this season (January) in addition to the three Offensive Player of the Week honors he has received (November 7, January 3 and March 13).
The MISL's two-time, defending MVP led the league in points (20) and assists (11) in March. His nine goals for the month ranked second to Jamar Beasley and teammate, Marcelo Fontana (10). Howes' closest competition for the month had 14 points. The Tacoma, Washington, native's March included two five point games, tying the MISL's single-game high this season. In all, he totaled six multi-point games, including a hat-trick in the Greg Howes bobble-head game on March 12.
The 2005-06 season has been a landmark year, even by the two-time MVP's standards. His March numbers have helped him to build a 13 point edge in league's scoring chase entering the season's final weekend. He has 33 assists on the year, a career-high set in eight fewer games than it took for him to reach 32 last season. With one game left, he has averaged 2.5 points per contest, more than his averages in his two previous MVP campaigns. He is tied for the league lead in goals, and leads in assists and restart scores.
The Milwaukee Wave signed Howes prior to the 2000-01 season. Now in his sixth season with the Wave, Howes has tallied 231 goals and 143 assists (485 points) in 217 games. This season he was named to his third All-Star team. The three-time All-MISL First Team selection has been a part of two championship squads with the Wave. He is among the franchise leaders in games played (204 - 8th), goals (217 - 2nd), points (453 - 4th) and assists (125 - 4th).
The Wave will face the Cougars in California on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. It is Milwaukee's final contest of the regular season. A win will earn the Wave the second seed in the playoffs and a home game against Baltimore on April 23. If they finish with the third seed, they'll play in Milwaukee on April 21. Get playoff information and tickets by calling 414-224-WAVE. Wave tickets are also available at all Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com. Groups of 10 or more should contact the Wave Office for group rate discounts. All Wave games are broadcast on The Joy, 1340 AM and can be heard via webcast at www.MilwaukeeWave.com.
The Milwaukee Wave was established in 1984 as one of six charter members of the American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA). In 2001, the Wave transitioned to being a successful member of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). Through the guidance of head coach Keith Tozer, the winningest coach in Wave and North American indoor soccer history, the Wave has won four league titles (1997-98, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2004-05), seven regular season championships, and has made seven championship series appearances.
