Augusta GreenJackets News Release
SALISBURY, MD: The Augusta GreenJackets (16-18) completed their first six-game sweep of the season as they soundly defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds (13-23) on Sunday night by a score of 13-2.
Augusta started the night playing from behind as the Shorebirds took a first-inning lead by scoring twice to put the GreenJackets in an early 2-0 hole.
But Augusta would get things going in the next half inning as they manufactured a pair of runs on an RBI single by Victor De Hoyos and an RBI groundout by Kadon Morton to even the score at two after two innings.
In the fourth, they'd take their first lead of the night thanks to Stephen Paolini who sent a liner to left-center to plate both Kadon Morton and Geraldo Quintero, giving the GreenJackets a 4-2 edge.
That lead would begin to grow in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Braulio Vasquez to bring home Bradol Mezquita, making it a 5-2 game.
The GreenJackets would then begin to run away with the game in the seventh by producing three more runs with an RBI double by Stephen Paolini, a fielder's choice RBI by Brandol Mezquita, and a sacrifice fly by Eliezel Stevens to give Augusta an 8-2 lead.
They put the game away for good in the ninth as they scored one run on an error, followed by a Mahki Backstrom grand slam over the wall in left-center to put a bow on a fantastic week for the GreenJackets in Salisbury as they took the finale 13-2 to complete the sweep over the Delmarva Shorebirds.
Elison Joseph (1-2) earned his first win of the season for Augusta with Harol Arias (0-1) taking the defeat for the Shorebirds.
The pitching staff led the way on Sunday as the GreenJackets perfectly executed a bullpen game with Rolddy Muñoz working as the starter as he overcame two early runs against him in the first with a perfect second. Elison Joseph, who earned the winning decision pitched a scoreless third and fourth. Darling Florentino allowed just one base runner during his work in the fifth and sixth. Miguel Peña dealt a scoreless seventh inning with Peyton Williams tossing a perfect eighth and ninth to conclude a masterful performance by the staff.
The offense blew up for the GreenJackets once again on Sunday as every member of the starting lineup had a hit in the game led by Stephen Paolini and Kadon Morton who each had three, Paolini finished with three RBIs on the night. Seven of the nine GreenJackets collected RBIs with Mahki Backstrom bringing in the most with all of his coming in on his grand slam in the ninth. Augusta out-hit Delmarva 17-4 on Sunday, tying their single-game high for hits, which they also set against the Shorebirds back at SRP Park on April 27. The GreenJackets outscored the Shorebirds 66-18 in the combined six games, scoring in double figures four times to complete their first six-game sweep since August of 2021.
The next half of Augusta's 12-game road trip begins on Tuesday in Fredericksburg as they face the first-place Fredericksburg Nationals at Virginia Credit Union Stadium. First pitch of the series opener is set for 7:05 pm.
