Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
In what was the best game of the 2010 season for the Kannapolis Intimidators, Andre Rienzo tossed six shutout, and the bats exploded for 14 runs on 18 hits in a 14-0 win against the Asheville Tourists on Saturday night. This was game one of a four-game series.
Rienzo (3-4) was excellent over six shutout innings, allowing just two hits, both singles, no walks and ties a career-high with ten strikeouts, no walks as he extends his scoreless innings streak to 21 straight innings. Rienzo last threw a 7-inning shutout against the BlueClaws and he dominated the Tourists (17-12) today. Zach Piccola worked two perfect innings with four strikeouts and Chase Cooney dealt a strikeout to complete the eighth shutout of the season for the Intimidators.
The Intimidators (12-17) only needed one run in support, but tied a season-high with 14 on 18 hits. In the first inning, Daniel Wagner led off with a pop to center, but the hits came after that. Tyler Saladino hit his third double in two games, followed by a triple by Nick Ciolli and a single by Ian Gac to make it 2-0. The inning ended with three more runs for the Intimidators on a Ryan Hamme sac fly and a two-run single for Kevin Dubler. After the five-run, five-hit first, the Intimidators were not done.
In the second inning, Wagner led off with a single, followed by another single by Saladino and an RBI-double by Ciolli. A hit by pitch loaded the bases and Ryan Hamme hit a two-run single to give the Intimidators an 8-0 lead after two.
In the third inning, Jake Oester reached on an error, and then Wagner got his second hit, followed by a run-scoring single by Saladino. After a fly ball double play off the bat of Ciolli, Ian Gac doubled in Saladino before Brady Shoemaker hit a two-run opposite-field home run to make it a 12-0 game. In the inning the starting pitcher Nick Schnaitmann was finally taken out with two outs after back-to-back walks. Schnaitmann (6-8) allowed 13 hits and 12 runs, eight earned with two walks tonight. Chad Rose relieved him and pitched the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth, the scoring ended for the Intimidators who got a leadoff triple by Oester, a sacrifice fly from Wagner and then three straight singles to take a 14-0 lead. The Intimidators got one hit in the final four innings to end with 14 runs and 18 hits.
In the game, Saladino, Ciolli and Gac each had three hits, Ciolli and Gac each had three runs and Hamme led the team with three RBI. The two hits allowed by the Intimidators is the second time they have allowed just two hits this season. The 14 run margin is the most for a win this season.
The Intimidators have won two straight and look to make it three on Sunday at 5:05 pm as Ryan Buch makes his third start of the season and he will be opposed by Chris Balcom-Miller.
