Great Falls Explorers News Release
Albany, NY (June 9, 2006) - The Great Falls Explorers of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) have signed the first player in franchise history, Jamar Howard. Howard, a resident of Great Falls, had a celebrated college career at Wichita State and was named Missouri Valley Conference "Defensive Player of the Year" for three consecutive years and was runner-up for league "Player of the Year" for the 2004-05 season.
Last season, Howard played for the 31-6 American Basketball Association (ABA) Western Conference Champion San Jose Skyrockets, which is also owned by the Explorer's parent, Apex Sportstainment, and was the Skyrockets' defensive "stopper" and also averaged 12.3 points per game.
"We're very pleased to have Jamar Howard return to play for one of our franchises. He played a key role in our success at San Jose last season, and we're looking forward to his success here in Great Falls," said Kermit Young, Director of Basketball Operations for Apex. Young was the Head Coach for the San Jose Skyrockets last season.
Howard has a great incentive to be staying in Great Falls. He is working on his skills during the off-season, and his girlfriend currently plays on the University of Great Falls basketball team.
"It was a natural for us to sign Jamar to play for our Great Falls franchise," stated Joe Clark, CEO and Managing Partner of Apex and General Manager of the Great Falls Explorers. "Jamar and his girlfriend have a strong bond with Great Falls, and we hope that the locals will come and watch him play."
The CBA recently completed its 60th anniversary season on March 27 with the Yakama Sun Kings defeating the Gary Steelheads on a best of three series. That series featured the CBA's 2006 Player of the Year, Anthony Goldwire (Sun Kings) and the CBA's 2006 Coach of the Year, Jaren Jackson (Steelheads).
