Victoria HabourCats News Release
The Victoria HarbourCats infielder smashed an eighth-inning grand slam on Tuesday night as the HarbourCats opened a three-game road series against the Walla Walla Sweets -- the first grand slam by the HarbourCats this season.
Unfortunately, that was about as close as they would get, falling 9-7 to the Sweets at Borleske Stadium. The HarbourCats are 22-27 on the season, with five games remaining -- three of those this weekend at home in Victoria. The Sweets are still chasing the wild card playoff spot, while the HarbourCats have been eliminated from playoff contention, a year after posting a 22-32 mark in the team's inaugural season.
On Tuesday, Victoria starting pitcher Mikey Wright struggled for the second-straight start, failing to escape the second inning. He gave up six runs on four hits and three walks, then turned the ball over to Dylan Stowell, who walked four batters and hit a couple more in his inning of work.
That led to newly-signed 10-day contract righthander Riley Edmonds, who came on to pitch fairly effectively, going 5.1 innings, with one strikeout, one walk, two hits and two runs allowed. Edmonds recently completed his eligibility with the Victoria Eagles of the BC Premier Baseball League.
Including starter Matt Walker, the Sweets used five pitchers to keep the HarbourCats at bay. Walla Walla had a seven-run lead most of the night until Greager's blast in the eighth.
Alex DeGoti, Alan Baldwin, Hunter Mercado-Hood and Greager had multi-hit games for the HarbourCats, who outhit Walla Walla 11-7.
The HarbourCats will send Alex FaGalde to the mound on Wednesday and Alex Rogers gets the ball on Thursday in the series finale. The HarbourCats then return home to face the Kitsap BlueJackets in the final series of the season at Sports Traders Diamond at RAP, starting Friday night.
Friday's game is Mike's Hard Lemonade Military Appreciation Night presented by BELL Media, and Saturday's game is Wallace Driving School Fireworks presented by CHEK-TV. Sunday, an afternoon game, is Pure Day Spa Fan Appreciation game.
