Dallas Rattlers News Release
(ROCHESTER, NY). Rochester Rattlers attack Grant Catalino won the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week Award for Week Six after his Major League Lacrosse single-game record tying nine goal performance on Friday night against the Hamilton Nationals at Sahlen's Stadium. Catalino joined Tim Goettelmann, Mark Millon, Kevin Leveielle, and Ryan Powell as the fifth player to ever score nine goals in a MLL game. Grant Catalino is the youngest player in the select five man fraternity.
Catalino scored his first professional goal with 5:29 seconds left in the first quarter on an assist from Rattlers second-year attackman Ned Crotty. Fifty seconds later Catalino scored his second goal of the quarter unassisted, and then he completed his first quarter hat trick unassisted with two minutes remaining. The Rattlers led 6-5 after the first quarter.
He picked up right where he left off in the second quarter with another hat trick of goals. He scored his fourth goal of the game with 6:33 left in the first half. He hit his second goal of the quarter fourteen seconds later, and completed his second hat trick of the game with 3:11 left in the first half. His six goal first half gave the Rattlers an 11-6 lead at the half.
Grant Catalino finished up his record setting performance by giving the Rattlers their biggest lead of the game at 13-6 with his seventh goal of the game 3:42 into the second half. Rochester went into a 24:02 scoring drought for the rest of the third quarter and deep into the four quarter as the Nationals went on a 9-0 run. Grant Catalino stopped the Hamilton run and brought the Rattlers back to within striking distance with his eighth goal of the game off an assist from Greg Niewieroski that made it 17-14 with 2:16 seconds left in regulation. Catalino capped his record-setting scoring performance with a two point power play goal with eighteen seconds left in the game off an assist from Martin Cahill to close out the scoring 19-16.
"It's only been a couple of days since the game, and with our game on Saturday, I really haven't had the chance to reflect on it yet. I really don't look at it like I scored nine goals. Eighteen other players dressed on Friday night and played a role in what happened. It's more of a team accomplishment to me because I get the chance to play professionally with a lot of talented players. Scoring nine goals in a game is a great accomplishment for me, but the team still lost the game on Friday night, so it's a little bittersweet" said Catalino.
Catalino was originally drafted by the Denver Outlaws in the fourth round of the MLL draft (21st overall) and was acquired by the Rochester Rattlers in a trade for midfielders Bill McGlone and Jarrett Park in April 2011.
This is the second time in as many weeks that a member of the Rattlers won the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week award. Last week Rattlers attack Jordan McBride scored four goals and had two assists in the Rattlers 16-14 loss to the Boston Cannons.
