Sioux City Explorers News Release
The Sioux City Explorers kept their undefeated record in tact with the win over the Sioux Falls Canaries Friday night with a score of 6-1 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Good starting pitching was the key for both ball clubs, with neither team scoring a run until the fourth. In the fourth however, Canaries designated hitter Richard Stock smashed a one-out solo homer to plate the first run of the ball game.
In the fifth inning one Explorers bat in particular took fire. With the bases loaded, two outs and the Canaries leading by a run, Brock Kjeldgaard cleared the bases with a towering grand slam home run over the left-field wall to take a 4-1 lead. Sioux City had another run cross home plate in the sixth on a solo home run by Tommy Mendonca to extend the lead.
In the ninth inning the X's left-fielder Tim Colwell scored the sixth and final run of the game for Sioux City off an error by the first-baseman. Eric Wordekemper would close it out for the Explorers pitching in the eighth and ninth innings to cinch it for the X's, with a final score of 6-1 over Sioux Falls.
Right-hander John Straka received the win on the contest going seven innings, allowing only one run off five hits and tying his season high with eight strikeouts. Canaries starter Shawn Blackwell would be charged with the loss, giving up five runs in 5.2 innings.
The Explorers had two-hitters go yard on the night, Brock Kjeldgaard (6HR) pelted a grand slam homer in the fifth inning, and Tommy Mendonca hit his second home run off the season in the sixth inning with a solo-shot. The big hitter for Sioux Falls was designated hitter Richard Stock who scored the lone run of the game for the Canaries with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Explorers will play games two and three vs the Canaries Saturday and Sunday. They'll start a three game series with the St. Paul Saints at the new CHS field on Monday (June 22nd). For 2015 ticket information at Lewis and Clark Park, call (712) 277-WINS or visit the X's website at www.xsbaseball.com
