Grand Rapids Tops Iowa in Overtime

January 28, 2016 - NBA G League (G League)
Grand Rapids Drive News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa - Spencer Dinwiddie drained a 3-pointer in the first minute of overtime and that was all the Grand Rapids Drive needed.

Dinwiddie scored a game-high 24 points as the Drive beat the Iowa Energy 90-87 in overtime on Thursday night in front of 2,374 fans at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Henry Sims drained two free throws with 27.4 seconds left in the game to tie it at 87-87 and eventually send it to overtime. Dinwiddie, who is on assignment from the Detroit Pistons, was the only player on either team to score in the 3-minute overtime.

The Drive, the affiliate of the Pistons, improves to 12-11. Iowa, whose parent team is the Memphis Grizzlies, falls to 12-14.

Dinwiddie, a 6-foot-6 guard out of Colorado, was 7-of-14 from the field and drained six 3-pointers, which ties the franchise record.

Dahntay Jones finished with a double-double. He had a season-high 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting and 10 rebounds. Devin Ebanks had his ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

It was the season debut for Ismael Romero. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward, who defected from Cuba in 2012, finished with one point in seven minutes of play. Romero, who played collegiately in Puerto Rico, had spent the first half of the season rehabbing an injury. He hit 1-of-2 free throws in the first quarter.

Dinwiddie scored 11 points in the first half as the game was tied at 45-45 at the break.

The Drive jumped out to a 12-0 lead to start the game, highlighted by Kelsey Barlow's 3-pointer and a dunk. Iowa missed their first 10 shots of the game and didn't score until Terry Whisnant drained a 3-pointer with 7:17 to go in the first quarter.

James Ennis led Iowa with 22 points. Alex Stepheson had 17 points and 15 rebounds.

The small crowd size likely was due to the Republican presidential debate that also was in town at Drake University.

Grand Rapids next plays on Saturday at Delaware for a 7 p.m. start. The Drive's next home game will be Wednesday, Feb. 3 at the DeltaPlex for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
