Grabe Gives Fans a Great Game

August 8, 2012 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Bristol White Sox News Release

Hollywood couldn't have written a better script for Eric Grabe's night in a 3-2 win over the Kingsport Mets in front of a big crowd at Boyce Cox Field. Grabe who was celebrating his birthday with his family in the stands, collected the bases loaded walk-off single to centerfield to give the Sox the win.

The Mets struck first in the top of the second with a RBI sacrifice fly by Anthony Chavez to make the score 1-0. The top of the third saw another Mets run as Maikis De La Cruz delivered a one-out triple and later scored on an error to build their lead to 2-0 over the Sox.

The Sox got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, when Alex Williams' RBI single plated Jake Brown to get within one run of the Mets. The Sox later tied the game at two a piece on Brown's single that plated Juan Ramirez in the bottom of the seventh.

The bottom of the ninth saw plenty of action as the Sox loaded the bases in which the Mets brought in five infielders to keep the Sox from scoring. Grabe had nothing to do with the Mets strategy as he lined the game-winning single over the centerfielder's head.

The Sox pitchers were lights out as they only allowed two runs on five hits while combining for a season-high 16 strikeouts. James Hudelson picked up his first professional win for the Sox, while Matthew Budgell took the loss for the Mets.

Brown was perfect at the plate with four hits in four attempts and contributed two doubles for the Sox. De La Cruz led the Mets with two hits, a triple, and a run scored.

The 13-29 Sox will host the 15-30 Mets in the rubber match of the three game series tomorrow, August 9. The first pitch is set for 7 p.m. on Century Link Night at Boyce Cox Field.
